Part 107 in Kentucky: Cargo Hubs and Class B
Kentucky has Class B airspace you might not expect, around the Cincinnati airport in northern Kentucky, plus a busy overnight cargo hub at Louisville.
Kentucky surprises pilots in two ways. The Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport is in Kentucky, so its Class B airspace covers part of the state's north. And Louisville, home to the UPS Worldport hub, sees heavy cargo traffic, much of it overnight, which matters if you fly in twilight or at night.
This guide focuses on what makes flying in Kentucky different. State and local rules on privacy, trespass and parks still apply, and the Part 107 rules apply everywhere.
Where is Class B airspace in Kentucky?
Around the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky airport in Boone County. Flights inside it need prior authorization under §107.41, usually through LAANC. Louisville and Lexington have Class C.
What changes for night flights near cargo hubs?
Night and civil twilight flights need anti-collision lighting visible for 3 statute miles, and night flights also need current training under §107.29. Near a busy cargo airport, lighting is how arriving crews can see you. The civil twilight calculator shows when twilight starts and ends for any city.
Can you fly at Mammoth Cave?
Mammoth Cave National Park is a National Park Service unit. Under National Park Service Policy Memorandum 14-05, park superintendents use 36 CFR 1.5 to prohibit launching, landing or operating drones on park lands and waters, with limited exceptions; see the NPS policy. A Part 107 certificate does not change that.
What this means for the exam
Kentucky-specific rules are not on the FAA knowledge test, which covers federal rules only. The federal topics here, airspace authorization, restricted areas, weather limits and performance, are.
Other states are compared in the state drone laws guide.
