Quiz

Do I need Part 107 for this flight?

Three questions, about a minute. The answer depends on why you are flying, and the recreational exception only works if you meet every one of its conditions.

Question 1 of 3

Why are you flying this particular flight?

The FAA asks about the purpose of the flight, not whether you get paid.

Common questions

Do I need Part 107 if I do not get paid?
Possibly. The FAA asks about the purpose of the flight, not payment. Flights to help sell a property, promote a business or volunteer for an organization are non-recreational even when unpaid.
What are the conditions of the recreational exception?
Fly only for personal enjoyment, follow an FAA-recognized community-based organization's safety guidelines, keep visual line of sight, stay at or below 400 ft in Class G, get authorization in controlled airspace, give way to other aircraft, pass TRUST and carry proof, and register, mark and broadcast Remote ID if the drone requires registration.
Does TRUST let me fly commercially?
No. TRUST is a condition of the recreational exception only. Any flight that is not purely recreational needs a Part 107 remote pilot certificate.
