Part 107 in New Mexico: Restricted Ranges

New Mexico has large military restricted areas, including White Sands Missile Range, plus high elevation that cuts drone performance. What to check first.

New Mexico's distinctive Part 107 feature is military airspace. White Sands Missile Range and other military areas cover large stretches of the south, charted as restricted airspace where flying needs permission from the controlling agency. Add elevations well above a mile in much of the state, and performance planning matters too.

This guide focuses on what makes flying in New Mexico different. State and local rules on privacy, trespass and parks still apply, and the Part 107 rules apply everywhere.

What does restricted airspace mean for a drone?

§107.45 bars flying in a restricted area without permission from the using or controlling agency. Check the sectional chart for restricted area boundaries and their times of use. The restricted airspace post explains how to read them.

How does elevation affect flights?

Thin air at high elevation cuts thrust and battery margin; the density altitude post explains why. §107.49 requires enough power for the intended flight.

Can you fly at White Sands National Park?

White Sands National Park is a National Park Service unit. Under National Park Service Policy Memorandum 14-05, park superintendents use 36 CFR 1.5 to prohibit launching, landing or operating drones on park lands and waters, with limited exceptions; see the NPS policy. A Part 107 certificate does not change that.

What this means for the exam

New Mexico-specific rules are not on the FAA knowledge test, which covers federal rules only. The federal topics here, airspace authorization, restricted areas, weather limits and performance, are.
