Part 107 in Utah: Five National Parks

Utah's five national parks prohibit drones, northern Utah has military training ranges, and Salt Lake City sits under Class B. Where Part 107 flying works.

Utah draws photographers for its red-rock parks, and all five national parks, Arches, Bryce Canyon, Canyonlands, Capitol Reef and Zion, prohibit drones. Salt Lake City sits under Class B airspace, and large military training areas cover parts of the northwest. Much of the state's dramatic scenery outside the parks is still open to Part 107 flying.

This guide focuses on what makes flying in Utah different. State and local rules on privacy, trespass and parks still apply, and the Part 107 rules apply everywhere.

Can you fly in Utah's national parks?

Generally no. Under National Park Service Policy Memorandum 14-05, park superintendents use 36 CFR 1.5 to prohibit launching, landing or operating drones on park lands and waters, with limited exceptions; see the NPS policy. A Part 107 certificate does not change that.

What about military training areas?

Restricted areas and military operations areas cover parts of northern and western Utah. §107.45 bars flights in restricted areas without permission from the controlling agency. The restricted airspace post explains which special-use airspace limits a drone.

What federal airspace matters most in Utah?

Salt Lake City has Class B airspace; flights there need authorization under §107.41 through LAANC. High desert elevation also cuts performance; see the density altitude post.

What this means for the exam

Utah-specific rules are not on the FAA knowledge test, which covers federal rules only. The federal topics here, airspace authorization, restricted areas, weather limits and performance, are.
